How to Configure Nintendo Switch Controller for Monster Hunter Rise (PC)

This guide will help PC players who want to use a Nintendo Switch Pro controller to play Monster Hunter Rise on Steam. The problem with using the Switch controller on PC is that the A-B and X-Y buttons appear to be reversed during combat.

If you are new to Monster Hunter Rise—or haven’t used a Switch controller before—then you might not notice the difference. Otherwise, there are two simple methods on how to fix this problem.

Method A: Specific Remapping

This method lets you alter the controls only for Monster Hunter Rise while ignoring the rest of your Steam games.

Step 1: Open “Controller Configuration” in your Steam Client

Launch your Steam Library and find Monster Hunter Rise. Right-click on it, hover over the Manage option, and select Controller configuration.

Step 2:  Edit the controller inputs

A new window should pop up. Find the mappings for the A, B, X, and Y buttons. Next you must make the following changes:

  • B to A
  • A to B
  • Y to X
  • X to Y

This method is preferable because you will only edit the controls specifically for Monster Hunter Rise. Your other Steam games will not be affected.

Step 3. Go to the Options Menu in Monster Hunter Rise

Launch the game, go to Options, and do the following:

  • In Controls, switch the confirmation button from A to B.
  • In Game Settings, change the input display to Type 5.

Method B: General Remapping

This is an alternate method that applies the changes to all your Steam games whenever you play using the Switch controller.

Step 1: Open the Controller Settings

Launch your Steam Client. Click on the Steam button on the upper-left hand corner and open the Settings menu. Next, click on General Controller Settings.

The General Controller Settings in your Steam client lets you configure the default controls for all your games whenever you use a game controller.

Step 2: Enable the Nintendo Button Layout

Click on the box beside “Use Nintendo Button Layout“. This option can only be seen if you have a Nintendo Switch Pro Controller plugged to your PC.

Step 3: Launch Monster Hunter Rise

The final step is similar to Method A above.

Run the game and head over to Options. Make the following changes:

  • In Controls, remap the confirmation button from A to B.
  • In Game Settings, change the input display to Type 5.

Take note that this method changes Steam’s default setup for your Nintendo Switch Pro Controller.

Hopefully, a future update will fix the reversing button issue for MH Rise. After all, other PC games do not seem to have this problem with Switch controllers.

Now you can enjoy Monster Hunter Rise on PC using the Switch controller. If you are experiencing the unfortunate Fatal D3D error, check out this guide for a quick solution.
